Public Health Conference for Utah wrap-up

We want to express our appreciation to everyone involved in the UPHA 2011 Conference. The theme of the year, as well as the conference, was “Reaching New Heights” which we were able to achieve because of the efforts of so many.

Although originally nervous about changing the conference location, the move obviously worked well as we had one of the highest attended conferences ever. The Student Caucus was also able to more than double their participation this year. There were more topics than ever before, including the new pre-conference topics offered by the Utah Parental Association. The new Sunrise Sessions were also a big hit, as well as the keynote speakers and many breakout topics.

We were also excited to utilize technology this year to implement the new web site, membership numbers, online voting of officers, and online conference evaluation. Kudos to the Membership and Communications Committees, and especially Executive Director Paul Wightman for all their efforts in this regard. Another example of using technology, if you would like to see or download high resolution photos from the conference, feel free to go to http://cid-2b1438ade78e15f5.photos.live.com/browse.aspx/2011%20Conference

We are also excited for the establishment of the new Endowment Fund and the designation of 501(c)3 charitable institution status and tax exemption for UPHA. The Finance Committee, Lynne, Laurie Baksh, Paul and Dr. George White worked hard on these, allowing us to lower our costs and increase our financial stability to better reach our organizational goals.

Thanks again to everyone that volunteered in helping with the monumental task of putting the conference together. And thanks to everyone who participated. And if you have interest in helping plan next year’s conference, please contact a member of the Board or Paul.

  • Public Health Hero: Doreen L. Radford, Sinai M. Pauni
  • Rising Star: Kevin E. Nelson, MD, PhD

  • UPHA President’s Award: Gary Edwards, MS

Dave Cunningham has worked in public health in Utah for the past 18 years. He was hired as the Nursing Director for the Southeastern Utah District Health Department in March 1993, and became the Health Officer in June 1995. Dave works hard to ensure every citizen in the four-county area has access to public health services. He goes above and beyond the requirements of his job on an ongoing basis. He truly engages himself in the community by serving on various boards, councils, committees and project planning teams. He listens to the community when they voice their concerns and follows through with appropriate action to make sure problems are addressed professionally.
