I am public health

Thank you from Daisy Krakowiak-Redd, Past UPHA Student Caucus President

Hello UPHA! I want to thank all of you who supported me as UPHA Student Caucus President from January 2010 to April 2011. It was a great opportunity for me to meet other students and professionals in public health and gain valuable leadership experience. For those of you who don’t know, I am now pursuing a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Washington. I also had a busy summer with a public health project in Ghana, where I led a group of students in disseminating past research findings to communities in a way that was applicable to their daily lives. This was very rewarding to me, as some of the research findings were my own from the previous year. I am glad to use my public health skills to actually make a difference, whether it is in Ghana, Utah or Washington. I will miss my fellow students and colleagues, but I know the UPHA Student Caucus has been left in good hands and will continue to grow.

ghana

Time to get your flu vaccination!

This fall, everyone 6 months and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as vaccine becomes available, even if you got vaccinated last season and even though the vaccine composition is the same as last year. This is because your immune protection from vaccination decreases over time. Remember: flu season can begin as early as October and it takes ~2 weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in your body and provide protection against the flu virus. Get vaccinated as soon as vaccine becomes available so you’re protected before flu season begins!
